Be a Volunteer at After Gateway

After Gateway welcomes the services of volunteers and student interns. The volunteer coordinator (volcoor@aftergateway.org) and/or health care coordinator (depending upon interest area) will supervise volunteers and student interns. Volunteers / Interns will not be left alone with program participants, and will have access only to that confidential information necessary to complete their volunteer service or internship.

Requirements for Volunteers

  • Volunteers / Interns are required to be at least 16 years of age
  • Must complete an application
  • Must be interviewed by the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Must submit to a health care registry check
  • Required to affirm that they have no communicable diseases (and may be subject to a physical and TB test, depending upon their responsibilities);
  • Must present at least one letter of recommendation and a character reference from individuals who are not family members
  • Must complete orientation training (including bloodborne pathogens, seizures, confidentiality, client rights, duties and responsibilities, restrictions on duties, and emergency procedures training).

Volunteers / Interns are held to the same performance standards as regular staff in terms of their relationships with staff, participants, families, and board members. Failure to abide by those standards or to follow After Gateway policies regarding confidentiality and client rights are grounds for termination of the relationship. Failure to follow attendance criteria is also grounds for termination of the relationship.
